BICU Innovation Laboratory

An innovation laboratory is a space (physical, virtual or mobile) to facilitate the engagement and collaboration of young people, scholars, governments, private sector, and civil society in problem-solving through co-creating solutions for the most marginalized children and adolescents. Its scope is to facilitate dialogue in order to tackle one prominent social obstacle in the region: violence against children, in all its dimensions.

With technical and financial support from Unicef, BICU’s Lab is now up and running as a pilot scale, and is offering diverse opportunities for youths, children and adolescents to learn, and interact about social innovation, while searching and testing innovative solutions for issues related to child protection. You can find additional information about recent activities in the following press release section, on the Lab’s Facebook Page.

General Description

The project started when we asked ourselves: “how can we integrate the innovation process in UNICEF and its partners’ work”? In late 2013 UNICEF piloted the idea by organizing three mobile innovation labs in Managua, Bilwi and Bluefields. As a result of these successful experiences, BICU, one of the two leading universities in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (campuses in both autonomous regions, with 6 antennas in rural areas), expressed its interests in creating an Innovation Lab in its main campus in Bluefields to systematically identify and promote innovation.

The Lab has a long term vision of contributing to the strengthening of the protective environment and the capacity of children and adolescents to protect themselves from violence and other social risks. The idea is to empower youngsters by giving them the opportunity to gain transferrable skills while participating in the co-creation process to solve local problems, global exchange of knowledge and experiences, and the work with children and adolescents.

At the same time, the lab plays an important role in mobilizing diverse audiences in seeking innovative solutions for protection of children and adolescents, especially prevention of violence, and probing its effectiveness and efficacy for future scaling up.

In order to operationalize the Lab, there is not much investment needed if we can tap into the partnerships and collaboration. The Lab will mobilize different modalities of partnership to support its activities and develop a sustainability.
